Installing Projector Outdoors

This chapter explains best practices for installing LM3X projectors outdoors. It also describes safety considerations and outdoor-specific dangers.

Proper grounding is essential for the safe operation of the LM3X projector, especially in outdoor installations where exposure to moisture, rain, or lightning increases risks. Grounding provides a safe, low-resistance path for any fault current (e.g., from insulation failure or lightning) to flow directly to the earth, preventing electric shock to users, fire hazards, or damage to the projector.

Important Safety Requirements:

  • Always connect the projector to a properly grounded (earthed) power outlet using the supplied three-prong power cord or the supplied PowerCON connector. The third prong (ground pin) must never be bypassed or removed—do not use "cheater" adapters or two-prong outlets.
  • Use only outdoor-rated, heavy-duty extension cords with a grounding conductor (three-prong) if needed. Ensure the cord is rated for the projector's power draw and environmental conditions (e.g., waterproof, UV-resistant).
  • All outdoor power connections must be protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI, Residual Current Circuit Breaker) outlet or breaker to immediately cut power in the event of a ground fault or moisture contact.
  • For permanent installations, consult a qualified electrician to verify the site's grounding system meets local electrical codes (e.g., NEC in the US, IEC in Europe). This may include bonding the projector housing to the building's grounding electrode system if required.
  • If using a generator or portable power source, ensure it is properly grounded per the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Connect the projectors' Grounding Bolt to the electrical ground. (see grounding symbol on the side of the projector)

The LM3X projector requires a permanent (not intermittent) electrical power (24/7) and must remain on Standby when installed outdoors. When on Standby, the device maintains the correct temperature (cools in heat, heats in cold), actively prevents moisture from damaging the projector (through dehumidification cycles), and responds to the user's commands. Therefore, it's highly recommended to supply power 24/7. If permanent power is not available at your project site, consult support@LM3X.com

When the projector is on Standby, and a power outage occurs, it shuts down and waits for power to be restored. When the power supply is back on, the projector will automatically boot up to Standby mode.

The projector uses active air cooling, with intake and exhaust openings at the bottom of the unit. These openings must remain unobstructed and protected from direct rain, splashing, or pooling water at all times. Blocking or exposing the vents to moisture can cause overheating, reduced performance, or internal damage.

Supported Projector Orientations

  • Regular Landscape Image Mode - default

The projector's default configuration is set for projecting video on a vertical wall. In this regular orientation, the ventilation openings are well protected against any weather. (Max upwards / downwards device tilt 20° (LAZR 20K™) or 30° (LAZR 4G™), check supplied printed manual)

  • Portrait Image Mode - extension required

Some use cases, such as towers and tall buildings, require projector installation in Portrait Mode (image rotated 90°, making it taller and narrower). When installing in Portrait Mode, use the original rain cover: Portrait Mode Shield to prevent water from leaking into the air vents. Contact LM3X sales.

  • Floor Image Mode - extension required

When projecting on the floor, you need to tilt and aim the projector downwards. To prevent water from leaking into the ventilation openings, install the original Floor Projection Kit. Contact LM3X sales.

Landscape vs. Portrait image mode

LM3X projectors come with matching waterproof Power and LAN Ethernet connectors (Neutrik; IP68; POWER: NAC3F-TRUE1; LAN: NE8MC6-MO). These ensure reliable, weatherproof connections even in rain, snow, or high-humidity conditions. Check the projector's box for plastic bags containing these connectors. See the supplied printed box manual for details on connector types and their appropriate matches.

Direct sunlight entering the projector lens can cause permanent damage to the projector. The concentrated solar energy focuses like a magnifying glass, potentially burning the chip. Therefore, your LM3X projector is equipped with the mechanical Sun Shield, a small door that opens for projection and closes after the show to protect the lens and chip. Do the following to maximize your projector's protection against the sun:

  • Keep Auto Reboot Enabled and Scheduled Correctly
  • Avoid daytime scheduling if the lens could be directly exposed to the sun.
  • When manually switching the projection on, make sure the lens is not exposed to the sun.

The LM3X projector emits extremely bright, concentrated laser light—especially within the first few meters in front of the lens. It's not safe for humans to look into the projector's beaming lens from close range; therefore, it's best practice to install the projector at an elevated location (on poles, walls, or roofs) where the general public cannot reach it. If installing the projectors on the ground, make sure to restrict the area in front of the projector.

LM3X manufactures original attachment brackets for installing projectors outdoors. The Pole Bracket™ is a compact fit for existing poles and walls. The 360° Bracket™ is an ultra-versatile solution for walls, floors, ceilings or any angle. The Urban Pole™ is a sleek, low-impact street pole for projectors designed for city squares and large-scale urban objects. It provides minimal footprint and maximum elegance. The Variable Radius Bracket™ was designed for elegant portrait mode installations on street poles. Consult your project with info@LM3X.com to find the best solution for your project.

Some projectors are equipped with an external cap that covers the projector's lens/window. Remove the cap before use.

Do not place the projector in water, as it may cause injury and will destroy the device.

There are ventilation openings at the bottom of the projector; do not spray water into it.

Regular air filter replacement is required once a year in normal conditions and twice a year in heavily polluted areas. Follow the printed instruction booklet for air-filter replacement instructions.

  • Several spare filters are supplied with the LM3X projectors.
  • Contact sales to purchase more filters.
  • If you lost the printed instruction booklet, look for your projector's type "Box Manual" in downloads.
